Product Overview
Mass-loaded vinyl works on the simplest principle in acoustics: mass blocks sound. As a highly limp, dense sheet (2.5–5 kg/m² in common grades, about 1.5–3 mm thick) it adds mass to lightweight partitions without adding stiffness, which is exactly the combination that defeats sound transmission. Installed limp — hung loosely between studs or wrapped around pipes, never stretched tight or stapled flat — with seams overlapped and sealed, a layer typically contributes on the order of 3–6 STC points to a wall assembly; the exact gain depends on the base construction, so assemblies should be validated rather than assumed. MLV also wraps pipes, ducts and machine housings where barriers of any other form factor cannot fit. Manufacturers listed here extrude standard rolls and sheets, supply self-adhesive and foil-faced laminates, and composite products bonded to foam or felt decouplers that combine blocking and absorption in one layer.
