Product Overview
Sapphire is the material that made “watch glass” nearly synonymous with “scratch-proof”: single-crystal aluminum oxide at Mohs 9 survives decades of wrist wear that mineral glass and acrylic cannot. For optical windows the same properties apply — wide transmission from the UV through 5.5 µm, chemical inertness and extreme hardness — at the price of genuinely difficult processing: sapphire must be ground and polished with diamond tooling, which is why sapphire parts cost multiples of glass equivalents and why the supplier’s grinding discipline decides the yield. Manufacturers listed here CNC-polish flat and domed watch crystals, instrument windows and small optical ports in custom diameters and thicknesses, with beveled edges, single or double domes, anti-reflective coating and printed scales (minute tracks, logos) applied in-house. Orientation (C-plane standard), edge definition and cosmetic grading follow the drawing, with lot inspection for chips and polish quality.
